Box Score 4 ARKADELPHIA, Ark.- The Newman softball team picked up its first victory of the season on Sunday, but lost three of four games to Ouachita Baptist over the weekend.
Saturday
Game 1:
Ouachita Baptist (8-6) started the game on the right foot, when Megan Askew took a
Sarah Fipps pitch out of Sully Anderson Field for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Newman (0-6) fired back in the top of the fifth when
Kelsey Jones doubled after a Fipps ground-out. Jones advanced to third after
Peyton Riedel reached on an error by the second baseman. Riedel forced her way in scoring position, following a
Sarah Stutts ground-out. An Erin Carney single drove in Jones and Riedel to give the Jets a 2-1 lead.
The Tigers blew open the game in the bottom of the sixth, when they plated three runs on four hits. Newman wasn't able to answer, as they fell to Ouachita Baptist 4-2. Liz Carney led Newman batting two-for-three with two RBI's.
Game 2:
Newman (0-7) fell in a hole to begin Game 2, when Ouachita Baptist (9-6) scored in the bottom of the first on a Bailey Sanders RBI single. The Jets tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth on freshman
Kelsey Jones' second home run of the year. The Tigers clawed back in the bottom of the fifth, when Sanders' double drove in Alexis Johns. Newman answered half an inning later, when a
Kaitlyn Padilla walk with the bases loaded scored Jones.
OBU took its third lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth, following a Teresa Mursuli RBI single. In a game that saw four lead changes, the Jets had an answer in the top of the seventh. Following a Steph Harshberger ground-out,
Briana Hallacy launched her first home run of the season to tie the game at 3-3. The Tigers drew the last straw in the bottom of the seventh, when Megan Askew singled, then stole second to put herself in scoring position. A Rayn House walk-off single scored Askew to lead the Tigers to a 4-3 win.
Katie Traffas batted a perfect three-for-three during the game.
Sunday:
Game 1:
In a common theme throughout the weekend, Ouachita Baptist (9-7) plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Tigers added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth on an Alexis John RBI single. The top of the fifth was a come together moment for Newman (1-7).
Sarah Balderas doubled to lead off the frame. Following two fly outs by
Kaitlyn Padilla and Erin Carney, the Jets reeled off five runs on five hits, two runs coming off of a
Katie Traffas single.
OBU wouldn't be outdone, scoring two runs on three hits, to tie the game up at 5-5. The top of the seventh brought some of the same magic for Newman. With two outs, and Ouachita Baptist bats ready to roar, Traffas reached first on an error by the shortstop, and stole second before Steph Harshberger walked. A
Peyton Riedel RBI single put Newman up 6-5, and
Kelsey Jones would put away the Tigers in the bottom of the seventh to secure the Jets' first victory, 6-5. Harshberger led the way for Newman, batting two-for-three with an RBI.
Game 2:
Ouachita Baptist (10-7) used the third and fourth innings to take a 5-0 advantage. Newman (1-8) rallied in the fifth when
Peyton Riedel reached on an error by the shortstop.
Sarah Balderas' single pushed Riedel to second, and
Kelsey Jones single put Riedel and Balderas in scoring position.
Briana Hallacy was hit by a pitch in her at-bat to score Riedel, to cut the deficit to 5-1. The Jets continued to chip away at the lead in the top of the sixth, when Steph Harshberger led off the inning with a walk.
Sarah Fipps took a Abbi Frakes pitch deep to put Newman to within 5-3. The Jets tried to make one last stride towards the victory, but Newman could only put one run across in the top of the seventh, and Ouachita Baptist preserved the 5-4 victory.
Katie Traffas led Newman with a two-for-four performance from the plate.
