Jets Split at Pitt State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Newman softball team notched its second win en route to a non-conference split with Pittsburg State Tuesday afternoon at the PSU Softball Complex in Pittsburg, Kan. The Jets picked up a 6-5 win in the opener, before suffering a 15-0 loss in the finale.

Game 1 - Newman 6, Pitt State 5
After surrendering a second-inning run to Pitt State (5-13), Newman (2-8) made its answer in the third. Sarah Stutts singled up the middle to open the inning. Kaitlyn Padilla followed, reaching on an error at third that moved Stutts to second. Erin Monday singled down the right-field line, and loaded the bases for Brianna Hallacy. The 5-1 junior outfielder took advantage of the 40+ mph wind, and blasted a grand slam over the left-field fence, giving the Jets a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third.

The Gorillas countered with a pair of runs in the third, and pulled to within 4-3, but the Jets had an answer of their own in the fourth. Steph Harshberger opened the inning by reaching on another error at third, then moved to second on a Sarah Balderas sacrifice bunt. Stutts walked as Newman's next batter, before Padilla was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Newman once again. Monday delivered once again, notching her second single in as many innings, and pushed Harshberger and Stutts across the plate to push Newman's lead back to 6-3.

A pair of solo bombs by the Gorillas in the sixth pulled the hosts back to within one, but that's as close as they would get. Newman held off a late rally attempt in the seventh and secured the 6-5 win.

Hallacy finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and four RBI's. Monday finished with an identical 2-4 mark in her at-bats, adding a run and two RBI.

Sarah Fipps went the distance in the circle for the Jets. The sophomore allowed five runs (two earned) on 10 hits with 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Game 2 - Pitt State 15, Newman 0
Pitt State (6-13) made one thing clear in the early stages of Tuesday's second game: they were not going to lose.

The Gorillas forced Newman (2-9) starter Stephanie Smolsky out of the game before she could complete an inning, while plating three runs in the opening inning. A five-run second inning put the Jets in an 8-0 hole in just the second inning, and the Gorillas were far from finished. PSU added three more in the third, and four more in the fourth en route to the 15-0 win. The Jets were held to just five hits in the losing effort.

Stephanie Smolsky was tagged with the loss in Tuesday's late game. The junior allowed three earned runs on five hits, and was removed from the game with two outs in the first.

With the split, the Jets move to 2-9 on the season. They will face a short turnaround, hosting Truman State in a 2 p.m. contest Wednesday afternoon at the Newman Softball Field.
