Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 WICHITA - Truman State took advantage of a stiff south wind and blasted four home runs in a sweep of the Newman softball team Wednesday afternon at NU Softball Park. The Jets dropped the first game 5-1, then fell 9-7 in the second game.
Game 1 - Truman State 5, Newman 1
Truman State (8-10) launched its first home run with two outs in the top of the first inning; a two run shot that gave the Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead.
Newman (2-10) got one of those runs back in the third. Brianna Hallacy opened the inning with a double to left-center, then scored on an RBI single to right field from
Sarah Fipps. After three innings, the Jets had narrowed the gap to 2-1.
The Bulldogs struck again with a pair of runs in the fifth, and another in the sixth, and held the Jets' offense at bay on their way to the 5-1 win.
Fipps led the Jets offensively, finishing 2-for-3 in the contest with an RBI, while Hallacy went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Fipps also went the distance in the pitching circle, surrendering five runs (four earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks in a complete game effort.
Game 2 - Truman State 9, Newman 7
Truman (9-10) opened Wednesday's second game exactly like it started the first with a two-run home run with one out the top of the first, but this time the Bulldogs added a pair of solo bombs that gave the visitors a 5-0 lead. TSU added three more runs in the second, and took what appeared to be a commanding 8-0 lead after two innings of work.
Newman (2-10) started its comeback bid in the third.
Sarah Balderas walked to open the inning, then moved to second when
Erin Monday walked.
Sarah Fipps singled to center and was thrown out trying to stretch her it into a double, but during that time Balderas crossed the plate for the Jets' first run of the game.
The Jets struck again in the fourth. Hallacy walked as the second batter of the inning, then used back-to-back singles from
Katie Traffas and Erin Carney to move to third. Hallacy then scored on
Sarah Balderas' double to right center, which also pushed Traffas and Carney across the plate, and pulled the Jets to within 8-4.
Truman added another run in the seventh, and took a 9-4 lead with three outs remaining, but the Jets refused to die. Monday opened the final frame with a single down the right field line before being replaced on the base path with pinch-runner
Anna Scheuffele. A Fipps double down the left field line plated Scheuffele, and pulled Newman back to within four. Singles from
Kelsey Jones and Liz Carney, and a throwing error by the TSU centerfielder led to two more runs, and narrowed the Bulldog lead to 9-7, but Balderas popped up to shortstop to end the game.
Sarah Fipps led the way for the Jets offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI. Liz Carney went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and an RBI of her own.
Newman starter
Kelsey Jones was hit with her third loss of the season. The freshman allowed eight earned runs on nine hits in 1.2 innings of work before being replaced by Fipps with one out in the second.
With the sweep, the Jets fall to 2-10 on the season. They will return to action Tuesday, hosting Southwestern Oklahoma State in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at NU Softball Field.
