William Jewell Flies By Newman Softball, 5-4 & 10-0

LIBERTY, Mo.- The Newman softball team was swept in non-conference action on Wednesday at William Jewell, 5-4 (9) and 10-0. 
Game 1:
Neither team could steal the momentum in the first game at William Jewell Softball Field, until Newman (3-23) struck in the third inning. Briana Hallacy hit a double following a Sarah Stutts ground-out, and advanced to third after a Kelsey Jones single that also put Steph Harshberger in scoring position. Peyton Riedel plated Hallacy and Harshberger after Eileen Greenwood made an error at shortstop. A double by Katie Traffas scored Jones and Riedel to give the Jets a 4-0 lead.
William Jewell (19-17) scored two runs in the fifth, and single runs in the sixth and seventh innnings to push the game into extra innings. In the eighth inning, Newman couldn't push anyone around the bases, as Kelsey Jones logged the only hit.

Sarah Fipps held the Cardinals at bay in the eighth, but the Jets couldn't get anyone on the basepaths in the ninth.  William Jewell. Eileen Greenwood made up for her error in the field, and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth to put the Cardinals on top, 5-4. 
Katie Traffas led the Jets' offense with a 3-for-4 performance with two RBI's. 
Game 2:
Newman (3-24) never took off in the second game of the doubleheader. Briana Hallacy led off the game with a single, but that was the only hit the Jets could muster. William Jewell (20-17) used four run innings in the second and third innings, combined with a two run inning in the bottom of the fourth to run-rule Newman 10-0. 
The Jets return to the diamond on Friday, when Heartland Conference foe, St. Mary's visits Newman Softball Field for a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
