St. Mary's Visits Softball On Friday

WICHITA- The Newman softball team will look to turn things around on Friday, when St. Mary's visits Wichita for a three-game series. Friday's doubleheader will start at 3 p.m., and the series finale is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday. 
Newman (3-25, 1-8 Heartland) is looking to finish the season strong, after losing 11 straight games. Freshman Kelsey Jones has turned her game up a notch at the plate, pushing her batting average to .283, the second-best mark on the team. Briana Hallacy has been a mainstay at the top of the order, getting on base any way she possibly can. Sarah Fipps has done her part on the mound, leading the team with 58 strikeouts in 120.1 innings. Fipps has thrown 90 more innings than any other Jet. 
St. Mary's (25-16, 7-2 Heartland) has won five out of its last six Heartland games. The Rattlers travel to Wichita with a 6-7 record on the road. St. Mary's is hitting .310 as a team, and are led by Vianna Gutierrez's .397 average. Taylor Vidrine (.376 avg) leads the team with seven home runs, and is second on the team with 24 RBI's. Emily Brittain has led the Rattlers' pitching staff thus far in the season. Brittain comes into the series with a 12-3 record, 2.78 ERA, while striking out 68 opponents.
