William Jewell Visits Softball on Thursday

WICHITA- The Newman softball team will look to get back on a winning track, when William Jewell pays a return visit to Wichita on Thursday. The Cardinals defeated the Jets 4-5 (9), and 10-0 on April 11 in Liberty, Mo. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Newman Softball Field.

Newman (3-28, 1-11 Heartland) has lost its last 14 games, but senior Steph Harshberger is currently riding a three-game winning streak. Sarah Fipps has made her mark on Heartland Conference opponents thus far in the season. The Noble, Okla. native is third in innings pitched (134.0), fifth in batters struck out looking (19), while freshman Kelsey Jones is second in the conference in walks allowed (15). Jones is leading the Jets with seven extra base hits on the season.

William Jewell (21-18) is coming off of a split against Missouri-St. Louis last weekend. Those are the only two games that seperate its last matchup with Newman. Sophomore Rachel Hayden has been by far the Cardinals to hitter this season. Hayden leads the team with a .367 average, and is tied for second on the team with three home runs, and 21 runs batted in. Hayden's .420 on-base percentage is 38 points higher then the second-best mark.
