Softball Falls on Senior Day, 5-2

WICHITA- The Newman softball team had its four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, when Oklahoma Panhandle State took Game 3, 5-2 at Newman Softball Field. Steph Harshberger led the Jet offense on Senior Day, batting 2-for-3 on the afternoon.

Oklahoma Panhandle State (19-26, 4-11 Heartland) used four hits to score the games first run in the second inning. Newman (7-29, 3-12 Heartland) fired back in the bottom of the fourth. Harshberger led the inning off with a single by the shortstop, and advanced to second on a single from Erin Monday. Back-to-back sacrifice flies from Kelsey Jones and Sarah Fipps plated Harshberger, and tied the game at 1-1.
The Aggies looked to take control of the game in the top of the fifth, using two home runs to score four runs, extending their lead to 5-1. Newman fought back in its half of the inning. Liz Carney doubled to left center to lead off the frame, and scored on a Sarah Stutts single up the middle to cut the deficit to 5-2, but Kendra Wellnitz shut the Jets' bats down to help avoid the sweep.

Newman returns to the field on Monday, when Emporia State visits Newman Softball Field for the season finale. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
