Emporia State Stings Softball in Season Finale

WICHITA- The Newman softball team ended its season on a sour note on Monday, getting swept by No. 14 Emporia State 9-0 & 16-2 at Newman Softball Field. The Jets end their 2012 campaign at 7-31 with a 3-12 mark in Heartland Conference play.
Game 1:
Sarah Fipps started the game off strong for Newman (7-30), but Tricia Vogel's grand slam in the third gave No. 14 Emporia State (34-9) a 4-0 lead. The Hornets added two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth en route to a 9-0 run-rule victory.

Erin Monday and Sarah Fipps recorded the only hits for the Jets in the loss. Fipps struck out three Hornets in four innings of work, but gave up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits.
Game 2:
After neither team could score in the first inning, Emporia State (35-9) put the pedal to the floor in the second and third innings. The Hornets used a two run in the second inning, combined with 10 runs on eight hits in the third to take a commanding 12-0 lead. With Newman (7-31) on its heels, Emporia State added three runs in the fourth followed by single run in the fifth to take a 16-0 lead.
The Jets put together one final effort in the fifth. Kelsey Jones singled to center field to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a Katie Traffas walk. A wild pitch put Jones and Traffas in scoring position. A Liz Carney walk loaded the bases for Sarah Balderas. The freshman singled up the middle to score Jones, and Sarah Stutts ground-out plated Traffas to cut the final margin to 16-2.

Steph Harshberger, Kelsey Jones, and Sarah Balderas recorded the only hits in the game for Newman.
