Emporia State Travels To Wichita For Season Finale

WICHITA- The Newman softball team wraps up its season on Monday, when No. 14 Emporia State visits Wichita. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Newman Softball Field. The original matchup was cancelled due to rain in the Wichita area.

Newman (7-29, 3-12 Heartland) is coming off of its first series victory of the season, when the Jets took two of three games from Heartland Conference foe, Oklahoma Panhandle State this past weekend. The Jets won four out of five games last week, pitching two shutouts in the process. Sophomore Sarah Fipps has thrown 16 complete games this season, and has struck out eight more batters than she did last season. Fipps' 4.13 ERA is 1.59 points lower than last season's mark. Erin Monday continues to show why she is one of the most dangerous hitters in the Heartland Conference. The Glenpool, Okla. native is batting .339 on the season, and is tied for the team lead with five doubles on the season.

Emporia State (33-9, 20-0 MIAA) visits Wichita after ending No. 3 Central Oklahoma's 35 game winning streak on Saturday. The game saw a combined 29 runs, 33 hits, and eight errors. The Hornets own an undefeated record in MIAA play, and is hitting .337 as a team. Emporia State is led by Stephanie Goodwin and Tricia Vogel, who are hitting .454 and .414, respectively.  Goodwin's seven home runs are a team-high, while Vogel is leading the team with 45 runs batted in. Karley Schmelzer (14-3, 2.39 ERA) has fanned 126 batters this season, 37 more than the second-best mark on the team. The combination of Schmelzer, Jennifer Heerey, and Lauren Sharp have combined for a 2.57 ERA on the season.
