Washburn Pulls Away from Jets, 93-74

Box Score TOPEKA, Kan – The Newman men's basketball team fell, 93-74, at Washburn on Saturday (Nov. 23) at Lee Arena. The Jets drop to 2-3 on the season, and the Ichabods improve to 6-0.
 
Ryan McCarthy helped put the Jets up 7-5 early with two baskets and an assist on the third NU basket. McCarthy hit a 3-pointer at the 19:01 mark and after a Espinoza layup hit a jumper at the 18:07 mark for the 7-5 score.
 
A 10-2 run by the Ichabods allowed them to take the lead, 15-11, with 15:53 left in the half. Down 20-13, NU scored nine of the next 11 points to tie the score at 22-22 with 11:25 remaining in the half. A Perryonte Smith layup tied the score.
 
WU went up by 11, 41-30, at the 4:25 mark after a 16-6 run. The advantage was 12 points for the Ichabods at the half, 52-40.
 
With the deficit still 12 points at 65-53 with 12:52 remaining, WU pushed the scored to 80-58 with a 15-5 spurt in a span of 4 minutes. The Jets couldn't close the gap, trailing by 19 points or more for the rest of the contest.
 
Five Jets hit double figures led by Smith and McCarthy with 14 points each. Elhad Emerllahu and Marquis Cuyler added 11 points apiece, and Jack Pyle tallied 10 points.
 
WU's Kyle Wiggins poured in a game-high 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting.
 
The Ichabods shot 55.2 percent from the field, including 55.0 percent from 3-point range. The Jets were 40.0 percent from the field, and 38.7 percent from 3.
 
The Jets return home for a game on Tuesday (Nov. 26) against Bethel College at 4 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
