Box Score AUSTIN, Tex. – Newman's baseball team notched its first win of the 2013 season Saturday afternoon, taking the third game of their weekend series with St. Edward's 11-6.
Shanan Engroff and
Dylan Monroe each led the charge for the Jets with a 3-for-5 effort from the plate.
The Jets jumped on the offensive early, coming up with back-to-back two out hits to plate two runs before the Hilltoppers came to bat in the first inning. After sending the Hilltoppers down in the first, the Jets were back at it in the second inning. After Engroff singled with two outs and advanced to second on a passed ball,
Jarrod Flax doubled to left center to pick up the RBI, and the Jets held a 3-0 lead after an inning and a half.
The Hilltoppers answered right back though, plating two runs in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to one, then tacking on another run in the bottom of the third to tie the game up at 3-3.
The score would remain tied until the sixth, when the Jets would regain the lead thanks to more timely two out hitting. After
John Branum drew a walk,
Dylan Monroe singled into short left with two down to put runners at first and second, and
Shanan Engroff doubled to center field to plate Branum and put the Jets back up 4-3. The Jets then broke the game open in the seventh, putting up six runs highlighted by
Tanner Vinson's 3-run double down the left field line, and when the dust had settled Newman led 10-3 going into the seventh inning stretch. Newman would pad its lead in the following inning, with Monroe picking up yet another two-out RBI for the Jets with a single to right center to put the Jets up 11-3 heading into the final frame.
The Hilltoppers attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, stringing three hits together to plate three runs and cut the Jet lead to 11-6, but
Devin Osbment came in and put a stop to the threat, getting pinch hitter Ryan Dolezal to fly out to center and seal the Jets' first victory of the season.
Junior transfer
Brandon Roberts picked up the win in relief, throwing 4 1/3 innings and striking out four.
With the win, the Jets move to 1-5 on the season (1-5 Heartland). They will attempt to build on the victory on Tuesday, when they travel to Alva, Okla. for a midweek matchup with Northwestern Oklahoma State. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
