Box Score WICHITA - The Jets put up four runs in the first and junior
Jacob Furr tossed seven scoreless innings as the Jets defeated the Aggies of Oklahoma Panhandle State 5-0 in their home opener.
Ricky Sanchez and
Ruben Marrero each led the Jets with a 2 for 4 effort from the plate.
After the Aggies went down 1-2-3 in the top of the first, the Jets took a 4-0 lead before OPSU came up to bat again. After
Jarrod Flax reached on a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a groundout,
Ricky Sanchez singled through the right side to plate the run, advancing to second on the throw to the plate.
Ruben Marrero followed suit by lacing a double down the left field line to trade places with Sanchez. After Marrero took third on a wild pitch,
Tanner Vinson singled to right to score the run and put the Jets up 3-0. Vinson stole second and then moved to third on a sacrifice fly, and senior
Dylan Monroe singled to right field to score the run and put the Jets up 4-0 after the first frame.
Newman added to its lead in the fourth inning, tacking on another run to extend the lead to 5-0. After
John Branum singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch, a pair of groundouts from Monroe and
Shanan Engroff moved him around the bases and picked up the run.
The early four run lead was more than enough for Furr, who surrendered just two hits and struck out seven over seven scoreless frames to pick up his first win of the season. Junior transfer
Blake Brommel came on in relief of Furr and tossed two scoreless frames while striking out two to seal the victory for the Jets.
With the win, the Jets move to 2-5 on the season (2-5 Heartland). They will wrap up their series with OPSU tomorrow with an afternoon doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. back at McCarthy Field.
