Jets Explode For 25 Runs in Sweep of OPSU

Box Score WICHITA - The Jets piled on 25 runs behind 31 hits en route to a 13-1, 12-3 sweep of Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Field.  Newman got on the board early and often and never looked back in completing their series sweep of OPSU.

Game 1: Newman 13, OPSU 1
The Jets scored six runs in the first inning and Zac Mickens tossed a complete game, striking out four and surrendering one run in the shortened seven inning game.  After Terrell Brown reached base with one out on a hit by pitch, the Jets strung together five hits in a row including back-to-back doubles from John Branum and Dylan Monroe to plate five runs before the fans could get settled into their seats.  Jarrod Flax singled with two outs and runners at the corners to knock Monroe in, and the Jets led 6-0 going into the top of the second inning.

After Mickens retired the side in order in the second, the Jets were back at it in the bottom of the inning.  Ricky Sanchez sparked the offense by smashing a leadoff home run to left center field to give the Jets a seven run advantage.  With one out, Tanner Vinson smacked a ground rule double down the left field line and stole third, then scored on a single through the 5-6 hole by John Branum.  The Jets kept piling the hits on, with singles from Monroe and Shanan Engroff and a double from Ben Wagner leading to two more runs.  After Flax walked to put runners at first and third, Terrell Brown laced a single into center field which got past the center fielder and scored both runners as Brown ran all the way around the bases and gave the Jets a commanding 13-0 lead after two innings.

With a comfortable cushion to work with, Mickens cruised through the game, retiring ten Aggies in a row at one point, and allowing just two hits through the first six innings of the game.  The lone run for Panhandle came on a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning, but Mickens recovered and got the next two outs to seal the 13-1 victory and secure his first win of the season.

Game 2: Newman 12, OPSU 3
Newman continued the trend of scoring early, with Ruben Marrero knocking Terrell Brown in with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first to put the Jets up 1-0 early.  The lead was short lived though, as Aggie shortstop Robert Montoya hit a two-run home run in the top of the second to give OPSU a 2-1 lead after an inning and a half.

The Jets would answer right back in the bottom of the inning though, putting up five runs thanks to a series of two out hits.  With runners at first and second, Ricky Sanchez sent a ball into the right-center gap to plate two runs, then scored on a double to left by Marrero.  After Tanner Vinson reached base on an error by the shortstop which allowed Marrero to score, he advanced to second on a balk and then stole third to set up the RBI for John Branum, who came through with a single back up the box to score the run.  After the dust had settled, the Jets had retaken the lead 6-2 and would not relinquish it this time.

Newman padded its lead in the bottom of the third, with Monroe scoring on an infield single by Jarrod Flax to push the advantage to five runs.  Panhandle cut into the lead in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run, but the Jets responded immediately in the bottom of the inning.  Newman strung together three two-out hits from Flax, Brown and Sanchez to plate two runs, and put the score at 9-3 after five innings.

The Jets would add to their lead in the seventh and eighth, highlighted by a solo bomb from Tanner Vinson that sailed clear over the scoreboard.  Newman's bullpen came in and slammed the door, with Devin Osbment, Tyler Rosenboom and Brandon Roberts combining for four scoreless innings to seal the 12-3 victory.  Tony Gonzalez picked up his first win of the season, surrendering three runs and striking out four in five innings of work.

With the sweep, the Jets improve to 4-5 on the season (4-5 Heartland).  Newman will look to get back up to .500 on Tuesday, when they travel to Alva, Okla. for a rescheduled matchup with Northwestern Oklahoma State.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
