Lady Jets Drop Two Games to Southern Arkansas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Newman softball team scored the first runs in both games of a doubleheader, but couldn't hold the lead in either game, falling to Southern Arkansas, 4-3 and 5-1 (five innings), on Wednesday (Feb. 20). Newman drops to 2-7 on the season with the two losses.
 
In game one, the Lady Jets led 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, however, the host Lady Muleriders knocked in two runs to down NU. With runners on second and third, a RBI ground out by SAU's Courtney Hudgins tied the score at 3-3. A walk-off double to centerfield gave SAU the 4-3 game one victory.
 
The Lady Jets scored their three runs in the first two innings. NU put up two runs in the first inning as the Lady Jets were aided by two Lady Mulerider errors. Audrey Zogelmann and Lacey Cowan put the Lady Jets up 2-0 after both scored on an error from the SAU catcher. NU went up 3-0 in the second inning as Molly Hein stole home from third base.
 
The Lady Muleriders plated two runs in the fourth inning. A 2-RBI double to left field brought in the runs to make it 3-2.
 
Cowan led the Lady Jets with a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Kelsey Jones started in the circle, going 6.2 innings and allowing four earned runs and six hits with one strike out.
 
The Lady Jets once against scored in the first inning, going up 1-0 in game two as Zogelmann came home after stealing third and then scored on a throwing error. SAU had two errors in the inning.
 
The Lady Muleriders tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning. A RBI single to second base plated the one run. SAU added three runs in the third inning to pull ahead 4-1. A double to right center scored two runs, and a single by the next batter brought in one run. SAU added one more run in the fifth inning for the 5-1 score.
 
Game two was called after five innings due to impending weather and darkness.
 
Kaitlyn Buck went 2-for-2 in game two -- the only two Lady Jet hits. Molly Hein was the Lady Jets' game two starter, going 5.0 innings and allowing five earned runs on seven hits with one strike out.
 
Newman continues its Arkansas roadtrip with a doubleheader against Ouachita Baptist tomorrow (Feb. 21) at 1 p.m. in Arkadelphia, Ark.
