Box Score LAREDO, Tex - The Jets scored two runs in the first inning of Game 1 but scored just three over the next 15 innings as Newman lost both games of an afternoon doubleheader to Texas A&M International, 5-3, 9-2.
Ricky Sanchez led the Jets with a 4-for-7 effort at the plate on the day.
Game 1: TAMIU 5, Newman 3
Newman plated two runs before the fans could get settled in their seats thanks to a pair of hits and a two-RBI single from
Tanner Vinson. After
Terrell Brown reached first on a fielder's choice,
Ricky Sanchez singled to left to put the Jets in business with one out. Brown took third on a wild pitch after a fly out to put runners at the corners for Vinson with two down. With Sanchez going on the pitch, Vinson laced a single into left center field and Sanchez motored all the way around the bases to score, giving the Jets a 2-0 lead after the top of the first.
The Jets would hold that lead until the bottom of the third inning, when the Dustdevils would punch back with three runs of their own. After allowing two walks to lead off the inning, Newman starter Jake Furr's throw on a bunt got away from him and sailed into right field, allowing one run to score and putting runners at the corners with nobody out. After Furr struck the next batter out, the Dustdevils' three hitter skied a ball to right field for a sacrifice fly, plating the runner from third and knotting the game up at 2-2. The cleanup batter followed suit with a single to center to score another run, giving TAMIU a 3-2 advantage after three.
TAMIU would add to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, stringing three hits and a walk together to plate two more runs and stretch the advantage to 5-2 going into the final inning of the shortened seven-inning game.
The Jets would not go down without a fight though, as
Shanan Engroff got things rolling by drawing a leadoff walk.
Christian Dye reached base on a fielder's choice that took Engroff off the bases, then went first to third when a ground ball to third from
Jarrod Flax was thrown into right field. This put runners at first and third with one down for
Terrell Brown, who delivered a line drive single to right to score Dye and cut the lead to 5-3. This was as close as the Jets would come though, as reliever Dino Cristiani got
Ricky Sanchez to ground into a 1-6-3 double play to end the game.
Game 2: TAMIU 9, Newman 2
Uncharacteristically spotty defense doomed the Jets in the second game, as the first three runs the Dustdevils scored were unearned and put them up early, while Newman's offense struggled to get on the board.
After two scoreless frames, TAMIU got on the board in the third inning, loading the bases thanks to a single up the middle and two infield hits. A fielding error by the shortstop allowed a run to score, and the Dustdevils were up 1-0 after three innings played. TAMIU added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of two more Jet errors with two outs to extend their lead to 3-0 after four. The Dustdevils then broke the game open in the sixth, stringing together six runs on five hits to give them a 9-0 advantage.
The Jets would finally get on the board in the eighth inning, with
Ricky Sanchez again delivering a hit. After
Terrell Brown singled up the box to lead off the inning, Sanchez tripled to right center field to score Brown and give the Jets their first run of the game.
Ruben Marrero grounded out to second on the next pitch to plate Sanchez and put the score at 9-2. That would be the end of the Jet threat, though, as TAMIU sent down the next five Jets in order to seal the 9-2 decision.
With the losses, the Jets drop to 4-8 on the season (4-7 Heartland). Newman will look to get back on track tomorrow afternoon as they wrap up the series with Game 3 against TAMIU. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
