Box Score ABILENE, Texas – The Newman women's basketball team could not overcome 26 turnovers as the Lady Jets fell, 62-57, to McMurry on Thursday (Feb. 28) at Kimbrell Arena. Newman drops to 10-15 on the season.
Despite the turnovers, the Lady Jets trailed by only one point, 56-55, with 3:24 remaining in the game. From there, the hosts War Hawks went on a 6-0 run with all six points coming on free throws. After a Lady Jet turnover, Jamie Wilson made two free throws at the 1:36 mark to put McMurry up 58-55. On the ensuing possession, NU once again turned the ball over with 1:18 left. The Lady Jets still had a chance after getting a defensive stop, but
Kianna Flannagan missed a layup with 53 seconds remaining.
Needing a defensive stop, the Lady Jets could not rebound a War Hawk missed shot and were forced to foul with 26 seconds on the clock. McMurry made both free throws to go up 60-55. The host War Hawks added two free throws late for the final 62-57 score.
Newman pulled ahead early at the first half, going up 16-8 with 12:56 left on a
Naomi Rosales layup. The Lady Jets led most of the first half, including a 32-27 halftime advantage.
The Lady Jets held the lead for the first 10 minutes of the second half, including a five-point, 38-33, lead at the 11:32 mark. The War Hawks went on a 17-7 run to take a five-point advantage of their own at 50-45 with 7:06 remaining. From there, the War Hawks held on for the 62-57 win.
Ciabattoni scored a team-high 16 points and added five rebounds and two blocks. Flannagan poured in 12 points and had a team-high six assists. Coleman scored 11 points, including nine in the first half. On the glass,
Sumayyah Muhammad pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Lady Jets shot 44.9 percent from the field (22-49), including 54.5 percent in the first half. The defense kept McMurry to 33.9 percent shooting (21-62). NU also out-rebounded the War Hawks, 39-32. The difference was the 26 Lady Jet turnovers, compared to 13 for McMurry.
Newman ends the regular season on Saturday (March 2) at St. Edward's in Austin, Texas. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
