Lady Jets Go 0-2 on Second Day in Arkansas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Newman softball team went 0-2 on day two of the Arkansas-Monticello Hampton Inn Classic. The Lady Jets were shut out, 5-0, by host Arkansas-Monticello, and NU fell, 5-3, to Ouachita Baptist in the nightcap. The Lady Jets are now 2-2 on the season.
 
In game one, the host Cotton Blossoms plated two runs in the second inning on a home run by Summer Huddleston. A bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning made it 3-0 UAM. The Cotton Blossoms' second home run upped the score to 4-0, and UAM added one more run in the fifth inning for the 5-0 score.
 
The Lady Jets failed to capitalize on their opportunities as nine NU baserunners were left on base. In the fifth inning, the Lady Jets loaded the bases, but a ground out ended the inning.
 
Molly Heins went 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs. She totaled two strikeouts. UAM's Courtney Wilson pitched the complete game, giving up five hits.
 
Leadoff hitter Kaitlyn Buck led the Lady Jets offense, going 2-for-4 with a single and a double.
 
The Lady Jets took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third in game two against Ouachita Baptist on a RBI from Kelsey Jones and a RBI single from Erin Monday.
 
OBU responded with three runs in the bottom of the third, taking a 3-2 advantage. Megan Askew brought in two of those runs on a single.
 
Newman tied the score at 3-3 in the fifth as Kaitlyn Buck scored on an OBU error. Once again, the Tigers scored in the bottom half of the inning, going up 4-3. OBU added one more run in the sixth inning for the 5-3 final score.
 
Kaitlyn Buck went 2-for-4 in the game. Erin Monday was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
 
In the circle, Taylor Parsons allowed five runs on six hits in six innings. She struck out three Tiger batters.
 
Newman travels to Texas Woman's University next weekend for a three-game series. On Friday (Feb. 8), NU and TWU play a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. from Denton, Texas.
