Box Score DENTON, Texas – The Newman softball team fell, 8-1, to Texas Woman's University on Saturday (Feb. 9) in the finale of a three-game weekend series. With the loss, the Lady Jets dropped to 2-5 on the season.
For the first time in the series, the Pioneers scored first, going up 1-0 in the first inning as a wild pitch allowed Jordan Readicker to score from third base.
The Lady Jets plated the equalizer in the second inning when
Molly Hein came home from second base after a throwing error from TWU.
The host Pioneers scored runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth inning to pull away for the 8-1 win. In the fourth inning, TWU plated two runs, both unearned, on a sac fly and on a single through the right side of the infield. A double in the fifth inning made it 4-1 Pioneers. TWU put up four more runs in the sixth, making it 8-1 after six innings. The four runs came on four different hits – two doubles and two singles.
Newman's offense was limited to only three hits. Larisa Garcia of TWU allowed the three hits and struck out six Lady Jets in seven complete innings.
Kelsey Jones got the loss for NU, dropping to 1-2 on the season. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits in five innings.
Taylor Parsons pitched one inning, allowing four runs on four hits.
Jones,
Kaitlyn Buck and Audrey Zogelmann all went 1-3 at the plate for NU.
Newman returns to action on Feb. 20 at Southern Arkansas. The doubleheader starts at 2 p.m. in Magnolia, Ark.
