NU Drops Doubleheader to FHSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA – Newman softball dropped both games of a doubleheader to Fort Hays State by the scores of 5-3 and 6-2. The Tigers downed the Lady Jets in the eighth inning of game one by scoring two runs in the extra inning. The Lady Jets fell to 3-18 on the season.
 
FHSU 5, NU 3
 
Visiting FHSU took a 1-0 advantage in the second inning of the first game when Paxton Duran hit an RBI single up the middle.
 
The Lady Jets, however, responded with three runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead. NU scored the first run on a bases loaded walk. Molly Hein gave the Lady Jets a 2-1 lead when she slid under the tag from the catcher at home on a fielder's choice. After a pitching change by FHSU, NU added one more run when a wild pitch allowed Audrey Zogelmann to score.
 
FHSU tied it up in the sixth inning on a two-RBI double down the left field line.
 
With the score tied at 3-3, the game went to an eighth inning. Two FHSU doubles plated two runs for the visitors as the Tigers took a 5-3 advantage.
 
Needing two runs in the bottom of the inning, the Lady Jets couldn't get anything going. After a sac bunt to start the inning, the Lady Jets struck out twice to end the game.
 
Hein started in the circle for NU. She went 7.1 innings and allowed four earned runs on nine hits with five strike outs.
 
FHSU 6, NU 2
 
In game two, FHSU put up five runs in the third inning en route to the 6-2 win. A double to center field plated one run for a 1-0 Tiger score. A single made it 2-0, and then the score was doubled on a two-RBI double down the left field line. A throwing error gave FHSU a 5-0 advantage.
 
The Lady Jets scored one run in the fifth inning with the bases loaded on a fielder's choice. NU doubled their score in the seventh on a Kaitlyn Buck RBI single to center field.
 
Taylor Parsons pitched game two and went seven innings. She gave up five earned runs and nine hits and struck out two Tiger batters.
 
Buck went 2-for-3 in game two with the one RBI. Zogelmann was 2-for-4.
 
The Lady Jets travel to San Antonio, Texas this weekend for a three-game series with St. Mary's. The series starts on Friday (March 15) with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
