Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Newman softball got off to a great start with a lead-off home run to start its game at St. Mary's, but couldn't score any runs the rest of the way in a 7-1 loss to St. Mary's on Saturday (March 16). The Rattlers are now 24-9 (3-0 Heartland Conference), while the Lady Jets are 3-21 (1-5 Heartland Conference).
Centerfielder
Kaitlyn Buck started the game with a solo homer to left field for an early 1-0 Jet advantage. Audrey Zogelmann continued the NU momentum reaching after being hit by a pitch. She advanced all the way to third with two ground balls, but a third ground out ended the inning.
St. Mary's knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single through the right side of the infield.
The game remained tied until the fifth inning when the Rattlers scored the go-ahead run on a single to centerfield, bringing the score to 2-1 St. Mary's.
The Rattlers added five runs in the sixth inning for the 7-1 final score. St. Mary's plated runs on a RBI single and two two-RBI doubles.
Kelsey Jones made the start in the circle, going 5.2 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
Buck went 2-for-4 from the plate with the one RBI.
The Lady Jets play Bethany College on Tuesday (March 19) in a doubleheader at 5 p.m. at the Newman Softball Field.
