OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Newman softball team traveled to Oklahoma City for three games Saturday (March 2), and ended up on the wrong end on all three games. The Lady Jets started the day playing host Oklahoma City, which ranks No. 4 in the NAIA, and fell, 12-1, to the Stars. NU then played a doubleheader against Missouri Southern, losing 6-4 in eight innings in game one and 6-2 in game two. Newman fell to 2-10 on the season.
No. 4 OCU 12, NU 1
The Stars put up 10 runs on eight hits in the first inning to take an early 10-0 advantage.
In the third inning, the Lady Jets had runners on the corners, but
Makenzie Flaska was out at home on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning, Newman plated a run when
Kaitlyn Padilla scored on a fielding error.
The Stars scored two more runs in the third inning for the final 12-1 score after five innings.
Kelsey Jones started in the circle for NU, going 4.0 innings and allowing the 12 runs on 13 hits. She had three strike outs.
MSSU 6, NU 4 (8 innings)
The Lady Jets rallied in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but the Lady Lions plated two runs in the eighth inning to win 6-4 in game one of the doubleheader.
Kaitlyn Buck tied the score at 4-4 when her single to center field scored
Taylor Parsons, who was pinch running for
Erin Monday, from second base. Monday started the inning with a single to right field, and Parsons moved to second on a ground out by
Kelsey Jones.
MSSU plated two runs in the eighth inning, scoring runs on a RBI double to center field and a RBI single to left field.
After allowing two runs in the second inning, the Lady Jets scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the second to tie the score at 2-2. With Buck and
Katie Traffas on second and third, Buck scored as
Briana Hallacy reached first on an error by the first baseman. A second Lion error allowed Traffas to score.
Missouri Southern went up 4-2 on a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
In the sixth inning, Newman pulled to within one at 4-3. After Traffas singled to left field and advanced to second, two straight passed balls allowed her to score.
Molly Hein started the game for NU, going 6.2 innings and allowing three earned runs and six hits, while striking out three. Parsons got the loss, giving up the two runs (one earned) in the eighth inning.
Buck was 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.

In game two, the Lady Jets scored first in the second inning. A
Taylor Schawe single to center field scored Jones.
MSSU took the lead in the bottom of the second inning as the Lady Lions plated two runs for a 2-1 advantage. The Lady Lions added three more runs in the fourth inning for a 5-1 score.
The Lady Jets scored one run in the fifth inning. Schawe led off the inning with a double to left and advanced to third after a groundout by Flaska. A RBI ground out by Traffas scored Schawe from third base, bringing the score to 5-2.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lady Lions hit a home run for the final 6-2 score.
Schawe went a perfect 3-for-3 in the nightcap and scored one run. Audrey Zogelmann was 2-for-4 from the lead-off spot.
Parsons started in the circle and went 5.1 innings. She gave up five earned runs on 10 hits with one strike out.
The Lady Jets travel to No. 9 Central Oklahoma tomorrow (March 3) for a doubleheader in Edmond, Okla. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
