Box Score 2 KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Newman softball fell to Rockhurst in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday (March 20) at Loyola Park. The Hawks took game one, 9-3, and game two, 6-4. The Lady Jets dropped to 3-25.
Rockhurst 9, Newman 3
The Hawks jumped on the Jets early, scoring four runs in the first inning, two in the second inning and three in the third inning. Rockhurst went up 9-0 after three innings.
The Lady Jets scored their three runs in the final three innings. Two runs were scored in the fourth inning when
Erin Monday doubled down the right field line, bringing home
Kelsey Jones and
Taylor Schawe. Schawe started the inning with a single through the right side, and Jones knocked a double to center field.
NU added another run in the sixth inning.
Katie Traffas doubled to right field, and Schawe scored from second base. The one run made it 9-3.
Rockhurst 6, Newman 4
After scoring one run in the top of the first inning, Rockhurst plated three runs and kept the two-run margin in the 6-4 victory.
Schawe started the game two scoring with a RBI single through the left side of the infield, and Audrey Zogelmann scored from third.
The Hawks scored their first two runs of the first on a double to center field. Rockhurst went up 3-1 on a fielding error by the Lady Jets.
The two teams matched each other for the rest of the game. The Lady Jets scored two runs in the top of the third then the Hawks responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. NU plated one run in the fifth inning, and Rockhurst matched with one run in the bottom of the fifth.
The two Lady Jet runs in the third inning came on a Jones double to left center field. Newman was aided by three Hawk errors in the inning. The two runs tied the score at 3-3.
After Schawe doubled down the left field line, Traffas singled and Schawe scored on a throwing error by the catcher for a 5-4 score in the fifth inning. The Hawks added a run in fifth for the 6-4 final score.
Schawe went 2-for-4 in game two with one RBI and two runs. Jones went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Lady Jets return home for a three-game series this weekend with Oklahoma Christian. The two teams start the series on Friday (March 22) with a doubleheader at 6 p.m.
