Strong Pitching Lifts Lady Jets to 3-2 Win over OC

Box Score WICHITA – Newman softball knocked off Oklahoma Christian, 3-2, on Saturday (March 23) at the Mustang Indoor Facility. Pitchers Molly Hein and Kelsey Jones allowed a season-low two runs on only six Lady Eagle hits in seven innings. NU moved to 4-27 with the victory.

The Lady Jets took a 1-0 advantage in the second inning on a RBI single through the right side by Kaitlyn Padilla, scoring Taylor Schawe from third base. Schawe started the inning with a walk, and a Katie Traffas bunt single moved her to second base. Schawe reached third on an error.

Newman pushed the margin to 3-0 in the fifth inning. Kaitlyn Buck scored from third after a throwing error from the OC catcher. A Traffas RBI double plated Jones for the 3-0 score.

In the sixth inning, OC scored two runs to make it 3-2, and the Lady Eagles loaded the bases, but Jones stuck out the next OC batter and a ground out ended the inning and any chance of a Lady Eagle rally.

Hein got the win in the circle, allowing six hits and two runs. She struck out one Lady Eagle batter. Jones pitched the final two innings and allowed zero hits and zero runs, while striking out one.

Traffas and Padilla both went 2-for-3 from the plate with one RBI. Buck also went 2-for-3 and scored one run.

The Lady Jets are 4-0 when holding the opponent to three or less runs.

NU takes to the road for three straight doubleheaders. The Lady Jets travel to MidAmerica Nazarene on Monday (March 25) for a doubleheader at 5 p.m., and NU is also in action on Wednesday (March 27) at William Jewell at 2 p.m.
