Box Score WICHITA – Newman baseball gave up nine runs in the first three innings, including six in the first, in a 12-5 non-conference loss to Fort Hays State on Wednesday (March 27) at McCarthy Field. The Jets dropped to 12-14, while the Tigers moved to 14-12.
The Tigers jumped on the Jets early with a grand slam home run. FHSU made it back-to-back home runs and a RBI single put the visiting Tigers up 6-0 after one inning. Fort Hays plated two runs in the second on a two-RBI single, and the Tigers added one more in the third on a single for the 9-0 score.
The Jets plated the next three runs for a 9-3 score.
Ruben Marrero got NU on the scoreboard with a RBI in the third inning, scoring
Christian Dye.
Shanan Engroff singled to right field to bring home
Tanner Vinson in the fourth inning. In the sixth inning, Jordan Jenkins' RBI double scored Vinson, making it 9-3.
FHSU added one run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth inning.
Newman got runs in the seventh inning on a sac fly by
John Branum and in the ninth on a Tiger error. The error scored Vinson for the third time in the game.
Vinson went 3-for-3 in the game with two doubles and a walk. He scored three times.
The Jets are back in action on Friday (March 29) in a doubleheader against St. Edward's at 1 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
