Box Score WICHITA – Despite the Jet offense putting up eight runs on 15 hits, St. Edward's offense was relentless all day as the runs piled up, culminating in a 20-8 victory for the Hilltoppers to seal the series win.
Things started off well for the Jets, after starter Tony Gonzalez sent the Hilltoppers down in order in the top of the first,
Jarrod Flax got things rolling in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff single off the third baseman. Flax stole second after several pickoff attempts, and
Tanner Vinson smacked a single into left field to give the Jets an early 1-0 lead.
After having their first six batters go down in the first two innings, the Hilltoppers finally got to Gonzalez in the top of the third. The leadoff man for St. Edward's doubled and advanced to third on a balk, and the next batter was called out on strikes. Following that strikeout, the Hilltoppers rattled off six consecutive hits to plate six runs, and jumped out to a 6-1 lead to chase Gonzalez after two and a third.
Devin Osbment came in and induced a 6-4-3 double play to stop the bleeding, but the Jets had work to do after the rally.
Newman answered in the bottom of the inning, loading up the bases with one man down thanks to singles from
Terrell Brown,
John Branum, and
Christian Dye.
Shanan Engroff singled down the right field line to move everybody up 90 feet and cut the lead to 6-2.
Jordan Ollenberger then smashed a triple down the right field line to clear the bases and pull the Jets within one, as Newman trailed 6-5 after three.
The St. Edward's bats remained hot, though, as the Hilltoppers put up back-to-back three spots in the fourth and fifth to extend their lead to 12-5, then added another run in the sixth to go up 13-5 and give the Jets some serious ground to make up going into the bottom of the sixth.
The Jets scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh to pull within five, making the score 13-8 going into the final two frames. The Hilltoppers weren't done yet, as they exploded for seven runs on eight hits in the top of the eighth to extend their lead to 20-8 and put the game firmly out of reach.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 13-16 on the season (10-13 Heartland). Newman will look to get back on track in their next matchup on Tuesday, when it plays host to Southwestern Oklahoma State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
