Gorillas Take Two from Lady Jets in Home Opener

Box Score WICHTA – The Newman softball team opened their 2013 home campaign with two losses to Pittsburg State on Wednesday (March 6) afternoon at the Newman Softball Field. In game one, NU lost 7-5 and in game two, the Lady Jets fell 11-0. Newman dropped to 2-14 on the season, while PSU moved to 6-4.
 
PSU 7, NU 5
 
One big inning was the difference in game one as the Gorillas plated five of their seven runs in the fourth inning. Three of those runs came in on a triple from Jordan Bradshaw.
 
The Lady Jets scored two runs in the fourth inning. Taylor Schawe scored after a PSU error. Audrey Zogelmann hit a single to center field to bring in the second run of the inning. Tiana Hacker tried to add a third run, but couldn't slide in under the tag from the Gorilla catcher. The Lady Jets were down 6-2 after four complete inning.
 
A sacrifice fly scored one run for PSU in the sixth inning to make it 7-2.
 
The Lady Jets put up three runs in the seventh inning for a 7-5 score, but couldn't pull closer. Lacey Cowan scored on an error, and then Kelsey Jones hit a two-run home run for the 7-5 score.
 
Jones went 3-for-4 in the first game, including the two-run home run. Audrey Zogelmann was 2-for-4 with a RBI.
 
Taylor Parsons pitched 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs.
 
PSU 11, NU 0
 
In game two, Pittsburg State put up five runs in the second inning. They added one more run in the third for a 6-0 advantage. The Gorillas added five more runs in the seventh inning for an 11-0 final score.
 
The Lady Jets totaled only two hits in the game. Jones had a double, and Briana Hallacy had a single.
 
Molly Hein went the full game in the circle, allowing 11 hits and six earned runs.
 
The Lady Jets travel to Texas A&M International this weekend. The three-game series starts with a doubleheader on Friday (March 8) at 12 p.m.
