Taylor Schawe's two-RBI single in the sixth inning lifted the Newman softball team to a 4-2 victory at Texas A&M International on Sunday (March 9). With the win, the Lady Jets are 1-2 in the Heartland Conference and 3-16 overall.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Schawe, who was pinch hitting for
Lacey Cowan, singled to right field.
Briana Hallacy and
Molly Hein scored from third and second to put NU in front 4-2.
Newman took a 2-0 advantage, putting up runs in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Flaska hit a double to left field, scoring Buck from second. Hallacy made it 2-0 Lady Jets with a solo home run, her second of the series, to left field in the fourth inning.
The Dustdevils tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run home run.
Kelsey Jones had a strong outing in the circle, allowing only four hits and two runs, both coming on the fourth inning home run. She had one strikeout.
Seven Lady Jets finished with hits as NU outhit TAMIU 9-4. Hallacy was 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI.
Erin Monday went 2-for-4.
Newman returns to action on Tuesday (March 12) with a home doubleheader against Fort Hays State. Game one is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Newman Softball Field.
