Box Score WICHITA – Newman softball ended its 2013 season with a high-scoring 11-9 loss to Texas-Permian Basin on Sunday morning (April 28) at the Newman Softball Field on Senior Day. The Lady Jets end the 2013 season with a 6-38 record and went 3-12 in the Heartland Conference.
Both teams put up big numbers early. The Falcons scored four runs in the top of the first inning, all four runs coming on three UTPB home runs.
The Lady Jets were hot to start, taking a 5-4 advantage after one complete inning.
Lacey Cowan knocked in the first two runs with a single to center field. Senior
Katie Traffas hit a three-run homer to right center to put the Lady Jets up 5-4 after one inning.
The torrid scoring pace continued in the second inning as UTPB plated four runs for an 8-5 lead. A double down the line scored two Falcon runs, and a single to center added another UTPB score. The Falcons also got one run on a fielder's choice.
In the third inning, UTPB put up two more runs for a 10-5 score. Both of the runs came on a two-out Lady Jet error.
Two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings pulled NU to within one at 10-9. In the fourth a sac fly by senior
Erin Monday plated the first run, and
Taylor Schawe hit a towering home run to right field to make it 10-7. The two runs in the fifth scored on an error and a RBI single by Monday. With Lady Jet runners on second and third with two outs, NU couldn't bring home the tying run as the Lady Jets fell 11-9. The Falcons knocked in a lead-off homer in the sixth for the insurance run.
In their final games, Traffas went 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Monday was 2-for-2 with two RBI.
The Lady Jets end the 2013 season at 6-38 and 3-12 in the Heartland Conference.
