Box Score GOODWELL, OKLA. – After dropping the first game of their doubleheader with the Aggies on a windy day in Goodwell, the Jets managed a split on the day with a 1-0 victory in game 2. Jake Furr tossed 8 scoreless innings of five hit ball to lead the Jets to a split.
Game 1: OPSU 8, Newman 1
The Aggies jumped on the Jets early and never looked back en route to the 8-1 win. Newman threatened to score in the first and second innings, but nothing came of it as
Tanner Vinson was thrown out trying to score from second to keep the game scoreless. OPSU would draw first blood in the bottom of the second, stringing three singles together to plate a run and take a 1-0 lead after two frames.
After the Jets went down in order in the top of the third, the Aggies broke the game open in the bottom of the inning, unloading for seven runs on seven hits to chase
Zak Mickens from the game early, and when the dust had settled OPSU had taken a commanding 8-0 lead through the first three innings of play.
The Jets were never able to recover from the early deficit, with the lone run coming in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-out single from
Terrell Brown to knock in
John Branum from third. Newman struggled to keep the offense rolling though, and Aggie starter Nolan Glasscock retired the next seven Jets in order to wrap the game up.
Game 2: Newman 1, OPSU 0
Offense was much harder to come by in the second game, with the two teams totaling just nine hits between them.
Ben Wagner accounted for half of the Jets' hits behind a 2 for 3 effort with a stolen base.
Newman's only run would come in the top of the fifth inning, with
Shanan Engroff getting things rolling with a leadoff single into left center. After Engroff moved up to second on a bunt, Wagner laced a single over the shortstop to put runners at the corners with one away.
Jarrod Flax ripped a ball down the third base line that seemed like a sure double, only to have the third baseman snare it to keep the runners at first and third with two down.
Ben Wagner then took off for second to draw a pickoff throw and get in a rundown, which allowed Engroff to score as the shortstop's throw home bounced off the catcher and saw Wagner move over to third.
That run was all the support that Jake Furr needed, as he pitched into the ninth inning and kept the Aggie bats silent all day, surrendering five hits and striking out six. After the leadoff man reached in the bottom of the ninth,
Brandon Roberts came on in relief of Furr and retired the next three batters to notch the save and seal the victory for the Jets.
With the split, the Jets move to 14-17 on the season (11-14 Heartland). They will look to take the rubber game of this series tomorrow afternoon, with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
