Jones’ Two-hitter Leads Lady Jets to Nightcap Win against SEU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA – Kelsey Jones' two-hitter pushed the Lady Jets softball team to a 2-1 victory over St. Edward's in the nightcap of a doubleheader at the Newman Softball Field. The win gave NU a split in the doubleheader as the Hilltoppers won game one 9-0. The Lady Jets moved to 5-28 (2-6 Heartland Conference) and have won two of their last three games. SEU is now 19-16 and 4-1 in the conference.

Jones pitched a gem in the nightcap, allowing only two hits, neither leaving the infield, in seven complete innings. She struck out three Hilltoppers and allowed the one run, which came in the seventh inning. SEU's first hit didn't come until the fourth inning on a single to Audrey Zogelmann. The only other hit allowed was a bunt single in the seventh inning.
 
The Lady Jets' two runs were scored in the second inning. After back-to-back singles from Taylor Schawe and Katie Traffas, senior outfielder Briana Hallacy brought home one run with a RBI double down the right field line, scoring Schawe. Traffas scored to make it 2-0 Lady Jets on a fielder's choice.
 
The Hilltoppers put runners on second and third with one out in the seventh inning, but could only score one run on a ground out. Hallacy sealed the game with grab in left field for the final out.
 
Jones was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Schawe also went 2-for-3.
 
St. Edward's 9, Newman 0
 
In game one, SEU shutout the Lady Jets 9-0. The Hilltoppers scored runs in the first, second, fourth and seventh to go on to win 9-0.
 
After plating one run each in the first and second innings, SEU scored three in the fourth. The Hilltoppers added four runs in the seventh inning.
 
The series finale is tomorrow (April 5) at 12 p.m. at the Newman Softball Field.
