Box Score WICHITA – The Newman softball team dropped the series finale, 6-1, to St. Edward's on Saturday (April 6) at the Newman Softball Field. The Hilltoppers took the series, 2-1, after a split in yesterday's twinbill. SEU improved to 20-16 (5-1 Heartland Conference), while the Lady Jets dropped to 5-29 (2-7 Heartland Conference).
The Hilltoppers got on the scoreboard first in the second inning on a sac fly to center field. SEU added three more runs in the fourth inning with two of those runs coming on a home run to left field. Two more runs were scored in the fifth inning on a two-RBI single up the middle, upping the score to 6-0.
The Lady Jets plated their one run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Molly Hein started the inning with a lead-off single and a stolen base advanced her to second. A sac bunt by
Kaitlyn Buck moved her to third, and Mackenzie Flaska brought Hein home with a sac fly to right field.
Hein went 2-for-3 from the plate and scored one run.
Kelsey Jones started in the circle, going the first four innings, and Hein pitched the final three innings.
The Lady Jets are on the road for their next five games. NU travels to Emporia State on Wednesday (April 10) for a doubleheader at 5 p.m. The Lady Jets then go to Oklahoma Panhandle State for a three-game weekend series on April 12 and 13.
