Box Score LIBERTY, Mo. – A goal in the 72nd minute by host William Jewell downed the Newman men's soccer team, 3-2, on Sunday (Sept. 8) at Greene Stadium on a hot day. The Jet dropped to 0-2 in their first two games, both on the road.
The Jets started fast in the contest, taking a 1-0 advantage in the seventh minute.
Adam Sawyer deflected a clearing pass and drove in to score and go up 1-0, scoring NU's first goal of the 2013 season.
William Jewell scored the next two tallies, going up 2-1 after the first 45 minutes. The Cardinals tied the score at 1-1 in the 18th minute and then went up 2-1 with a goal in the 31st minute.
The second half started strong for the Jets as
Noel Torres scored on a diving header off a cross in the 46th minute to even the score at 2-2.
WJC scored the game-winner in the 72nd minute and held on in the final 18 minutes to win, 3-2.
NU opens its home schedule next Sunday (Sept. 15) against Metro State at 2 p.m. at Wilkins Field.
