Box Score DALLAS – The Newman men's basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 91-76 victory at Dallas Baptist on Thursday (Jan. 16) at the Burg Center. The Jets improved to 5-10 and 2-5 in the Heartland Conference.
With the Jets down one at halftime, 41-40, NU outscored the Patriots in the second half, 51-35.
NU trailed 45-44 at the 17:25 mark of the second half then the Jets went on a 14-3 run to take a 10-point, 58-48, advantage.
Marquis Cuyler started the run with a 3-pointer and a three-point play for a 50-45 score then after a 3-pointer from DBU
Trae Beck made back-to-back 3s to push the score to 56-48.
Ryan McCarthy upped the advantage to 10 with a jumper with 14:04 left in the half.
The Patriots couldn't get any closer than six points for the rest of the way as the Jets led by double digits for most of the second half.
Five Jets scored in double figures with Cuyler pacing NU with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Cuyler added four assists, three steals and one block, all team highs. Beck added 15 points of 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range, and
Elhad Emerllahu added 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
Jeremy Espinoza was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, including 2-for-2 from 3 for 10 points in only 17 minutes due to foul trouble.
For the game, NU shot 65.4 percent from the field, a season high. In the first half, NU shot 66.7 percent (16-24) and shot 64.3 (18-28) in the second half. The Jets were 12-of-18 from 3 (66.7 percent), including 8-of-9 (88.9 percent) in the second half.
In a game with only 45 rebounds combined, NU held a 24-21 advantage, including the 10 rebounds from Cuyler.
The Jets return to action on Saturday (Jan. 18) at Oklahoma Christian at 3 p.m. in Oklahoma City, Okla.
