Softball Sweeps No. 10 SEOSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DURANT, Okla. – The Newman softball team swept No. 10 Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday (Feb. 15) in the season opener for the Lady Jets. NU moved to 2-0 on the season for the second straight season. The Lady Jets won 6-1 in game one and 5-3 in game two.
 
Newman 6, SEOSU 1
 
Taylor Schawe brought home the first run of the season with a double down the right field line to score Kelsey Jones. The Lady Jets were up 1-0 after a half inning.
 
SEOSU tied the game in the bottom of the first with one run, but NU scored two runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 advantage. Jensen Cromer scored the first run on an error, and a sac fly by Jones brought in Lacey Cowan for a 3-1 score.
 
Jones added three more RBI with a three-run home run in the fourth inning to put NU up 6-1.
 
For the game, Jones went 2-for-3 with the four RBI and the home run.
 
Cromer pitched the full seven innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. She struck out two and allowed one walk.
 
Newman 5, SEOSU 3
 
The Lady Jets used three runs in the sixth inning to come back and win 5-3 in the second game.
 
SEOSU scored one run in the first and three innings for an early 2-0 lead.
 
In the fourth inning, Kaitlyn Padilla scored on an error, and a Missy Swanson home run to left field tied the score at 2-2.
 
After a run in the fourth by SEOSU, NU scored three runs in the sixth inning to get the victory. An RBI single from Kelsey Fisher tied the score at 3-3. Jones scored from third on the play. Cromer hit the game-winner with a double down the left field line, scoring Fisher and Swanson for the 5-3 score.
 
Jones started in the circle, going 4.1 innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Cromer pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing two hits, and she got the win. For the day, Cromer went 2-0 in the circle.
 
The two teams finish the series on Sunday (Feb. 16) with a doubleheader starting at noon in Durant, Okla.
