Softball Sweeps Sterling College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA – The Newman softball team swept Sterling College on Monday (Feb. 17) at the Wichita Mustangs Academy. NU won the first game, 8-0, and got the victory in the nightcap, 7-0. The Lady Jets are 4-2 on the season.

In the first game, NU jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage with three runs in the first inning and one run in the second inning. Lauren Iverson started the scoring with a two-RBI single to center field. Lacey Cowan and Alyssa Jarmin scored on the play. Kassidy Furr hit a RBI single to score Missy Swanson for the third run in the first inning. In the second inning, Sarah Balderas scored on a pass ball for a 4-0 score.
 
Balderas had the RBI in the fourth inning for the next NU run. The ground out allowed Jensen Cromer to score from third base.
 
The Lady Jets added two runs in the fifth inning. Megan McNeil hit a triple that scored Iverson. McNeil scored on a throwing error for the 7-0 score. Swanson scored again in the sixth inning when a Sarah Morales single to right field brought Swanson home for the 8-0 advantage. The game ended after six inning due to the 8-0 margin.
 
Jarmin and Swanson combined for a three-hitter. Jarman got the start and went 3.0 innings, allowing two hits with three strikeouts. Swanson pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.
 
Newman 7, Sterling 0
 
In the nightcap, NU once again scored in the first inning, but got most of its runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Lady Jets scored four of their seven runs in the fifth and sixth.
 
A Kelsey Jones RBI double brought in a run in the first inning. Kaitlyn Buck scored. NU added two runs in the third inning. After a leadoff triple from Mikayla Medbery and a walk from Jones, Swanson brought both in with a double to left field. NU led 3-0 after three innings.
 
The Lady Jets plated three more runs in the fifth. Cromer hit a single to left center to bring in Swanson. Taylor Schawe singled to bring in Comer for a 5-0 score. Kelsey Fisher doubled to allow Schawe to score for a 6-0 NU advantage. The Lady Jets added one more in the sixth with a RBI double from Swanson.
 
Jones started in the circle for NU, going 4.0 innings and allowing one hit. She had two strikeouts. Cromer finished the final three innings and allowed two hits with three strikeouts.   
 
The Lady Jets doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday (Feb. 19) at Benedictine has been postponed so NU will next be in action at the West Texas A&M Tournament on Feb. 21 and 22 in Canyon, Texas.
