Softball Splits with Cameron

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CANYON, Texas – The Newman softball team split with Cameron on Friday (Feb. 21) at West Texas A&M. The Lady Jets dropped game one, 7-2, but came back to win the nightcap, 8-6. NU moved to 5-3 with the split.
 
CU 7, NU 2
 
In game one, NU allowed one big inning and that was the difference. Cameron plated five runs in the third inning. The first run came on a double down the left field line for a 2-1 CU lead. A double to left field made it 3-1, and then a triple upped the score to 4-1. A single and another triple to right field put CU in front 6-1 in the third inning.
 
The Lady Jets scored one run in the second on a RBI single to left field from Kaitlyn Buck. Sarah Morales scored. Buck helped NU score the next run as she singled to the shortstop and an error allowed Jensen Cromer to score.
 
CU scored one run in the first inning and one more run in the sixth inning.
 
Cromer got the start for NU, allowing 11 hits and seven runs. She struck out three.
 
NU 8, CU 6
 
The Lady Jets got the split with two late runs in the sixth inning to get a 8-6 win.
 
After allowing two CU runs in the first inning, the Lady Jets tied the score with two runs in the second. Kassidy Furr drove in both runs with a triple to right field. Kelsey Fisher and Morales scored.
 
NU went in front 6-2 with four runs in the third inning. Morales singled allowing Mikayla Medbery to score and Missy Swanson also scored after an error from the pitcher. A passed ball allowed Cromer to come home, and a fielder's choice scored Morales for the 6-2 score.
 
Cameron evened the score at 6-6 with one runs in the fourth and fifth innings then two runs in the sixth inning.
 
Lacey Cowan singled up the middle in the sixth inning to plate Fisher for a 7-6 NU advantage. An error by the shortstop allowed Cowan to score for an 8-6 lead.
 
Kelsey Jones got the start in the circle, pitching the complete 7 innings. She gave up seven hits and four earned runs and struck out six batters. Jones moved to 2-0 on the season.
 
The Lady Jets are back in action tomorrow (Feb. 22) with two games against No. 2 West Texas A&M. Game one is set for 1 p.m. and game two starts at 3 p.m. in Canyon, Texas.
