Softball Upset Bid Falls Short at No. 2 WTAMU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CANYON, Texas – The Newman softball team fell short to No. 2 West Texas A&M, getting swept in two games on Saturday (Feb. 22). NU dropped game one, 17-5, and lost, 8-0, in game two. The Lady Jets dropped to 5-5 on the season.
 
WTAMU 17, NU 5
 
West Texas scored two runs in the first and then had two big innings in the second and fourth. WTAMU plated seven runs in the second and added eight runs in the fourth.
 
Jensen Cromer hit a two-RBI double to left center in the third inning as the Lady Jets scored two runs in the third.
 
Missy Swanson knocked in three runs in the fifth with a three-run home run to left center. Sarah Balderas and Mikayla Medbery scored.
 
Cromer pitched the first 1.1 inning, allowing six earned runs on four hits. Kelsey Jones pitched 1.2 inning and allowed six runs on three hits. Alyssa Jarman also pitched, going 1.0 inning. She allowed three runs.
 
WTAMU 8, NU 0
 
West Texas A&M plated seven runs in the third inning and added one more run in the fifth inning for a 8-0 win in the nightcap.
 
WTAMU scored the first run on an error after a single to center field. The second run came in on a single to left field. It was 3-0 after another NU error. An illegal pitch scored the fourth run in the third inning. After a groundout plated one run, WTAMU added two more runs on a triple to right center.
 
A home run in the fifth inning was the final WTAMU run in the 8-0 game.
 
The Lady Jets totaled only two hits in the five innings. Swanson and Jarman had the two hits.
 
Cromer started in the circle, going 3.0 innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits. Jones pitched 1.1 inning and gave up the home run.
 
WTAMU's Hannah Newcomb pitched the 5.0 innings and moved to 6-0 with the two hitter. She struck out six batters.
 
The Lady Jets are back in action on Tuesday (Feb. 25) at Southwestern College. The doubleheader starts at 2 p.m. in Winfield, Kan.
