Softball Gets First Conference Win, Splits with SEU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas – The Newman softball team got a split in the final games of the three-game series with St. Edward's. The series ended today (March 1) with a doubleheader. SEU won game one, 6-5, but NU won the nightcap, 3-2. The Lady Jets are now 6-7 and 1-2 in the Heartland Conference.
 
SEU 6, NU 5
 
The Hilltoppers plated three runs in the second and third innings. A single to center field scored one run in the second for a 1-0 SEU lead. In the third, SEU added two runs with a two-RBI double to left center.
 
Kelsey Fisher had the RBI to score Jensen Cromer in the fourth inning to put NU on the board for a 3-1 score. A Hilltopper home run in the fourth put them ahead 4-1.
 
SEU added two runs in the fifth inning. Another Hilltopper home run plated the runs for a 6-1 score.


The Lady Jets almost rallied in the seventh inning, scoring four runs for a 6-5 score. Sarah Morales started the scoring with a two-run double to left field. A single to right field by Mikayla Medbery plated another NU run. The Lady Jets pulled to within one at 6-5 with a Missy Swanson single to second base. With runners on second and third, Cromer flied out to end the game.
 
Cromer pitched the first 4.0 innings, giving up four runs, all earned. She struck out two. Kelsey Jones pitched the final 2.0 innings and allowed two runs and struck out three.
 
NU 3, SEU 2
 
NU picked up a split with a 3-2 win in the second game. The Lady Jets scored all three of their runs in the first inning. Jones doubled to left field for the first run, scoring Medbery from third base. Jones scored on the next at bat as Swanson singled. Morales brought home the third run with a single to center field for the 3-0 score. Swanson scored.
 
SEU scored one run in the first on a single. A home run in the sixth inning gave the Hilltoppers their other run in the game.
 
Jones pitched the complete 7.0 innings, allowing only two hits and one earned run. She had three strike outs. She is now 3-0 on the season.
 
The Lady Jets return home for a doubleheader against Tabor College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
