Furr’s Sac Fly Leads Softball to 7-6 Win

Box Score LINDSBORG, Kan. – Kassidy Furr hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the eighth inning to lead Newman softball to a 7-6 win at Bethany College on Tuesday (March 11). The Lady Jets improved to 8-11 on the season.
 
In the extra inning, Jensen Cromer hit a sac bunt to advance Missy Swanson, who was on second due to international tiebreaker rules, to third base. Furr brought home Swanson with the sac fly to right for a 7-6 score.
 
Cromer and the NU defense held off the Swedes in the bottom half of the inning. After a sac bunt to move their running to third, Cromer forced two ground outs to end the game.
 
After allowing one run in the first inning, the Lady Jets plated two runs in the second inning. Kelsey Fisher hit a two-RBI double to right that scored Swanson and Cromer for a 2-1 NU lead.
 
The Swedes scored one run apiece in the second, third and fifth innings to go up 4-2. NU responded in the sixth inning with four runs. Two of the runs were brought in by a Kelsey Jones single to deep left center. Mikayla Medbery and Alyssa Jarman scored on the two-RBI single. Megan McNeill scored the third NU run on a groundball from Cromer, and Swanson scored on a Furr hit. The Lady Jets led 6-4 after their half of the sixth inning.
 
Bethany scored two runs in the sixth inning to tie the score at 6-6 and force the extra inning.
 
Jensen pitched the final 3.0 innings and got the win. She allowed one hit and two runs, none earned, with two strike outs. Jones got the start in the circle, going 5.0 innings with nine hits and four runs. She had two strikeouts and a walk.
 
The Lady Jets return to action on Thursday (March 13) at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan. The doubleheader starts at 4 p.m.
