Strong Pitching From Cromer Gives Softball Split with TAMIU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA – The Newman softball team split with Texas A&M International on Friday (March 14) at the Newman Softball Field. The Dustdevils won game one, 3-2, and the Lady Jets took game two, 3-1, as freshman Jensen Cromer pitched a three-hitter. NU moved to 11-12 and 2-6 in the Heartland Conference.
 
TAMIU 3, NU 2
 
The Lady Jets hit two home runs in the fourth inning, but the Dustdevils plated one run in the sixth inning to prevail, 3-2, in the first game.
 
TAMIU scored two runs in the second inning on an RBI triple and an RBI double for a 2-0 advantage.
 
Cromer put the Lady Jets on the board with a solo shot to right field. Kelsey Fisher tied the score at 2-2 with a homer to right field.
 
In the sixth inning, the Dustdevils used a home run of their own to score the game-winning run. NU had an opportunity to knot the score up in the sixth, but pinch runner Megan McNeill was out on a play at the plate.
 
Fisher went 2-for-3 with one RBI in the game.
 
Kelsey Jones got the start in the circle, going 6.0 innings and allowing six hits and three runs, all earned. She struck out six TAMIU batters. Cromer pitched the final inning and totaled one strike out.
 
NU 3, TAMIU 1
 
Cromer allowed only three hits and one run in a complete game win in the nightcap. The Dustdevils went down in order in the first two innings and scored their only run on a single in the third inning, TAMIU's first hit. Cromer once again worked one, two, three innings in the fourth and fifth. She gave up one single in each the sixth and seventh inning.
 
The Lady Jets scored one run in each of the second, third and fourth innings. Kassidy Furr's RBI single scored Taylor Schawe for a 1-0 NU lead. Cromer hit an RBI double down the right field line in the third inning, scoring Mikayla Medbery. Sarah Balderas hit an infield single to plate Furr in the fourth for a 3-1 score.
 
Furr was 2-of-3 in the game with one RBI and a triple. She scored one run.
 
The series concludes tomorrow (March 15) with one game at 11 a.m. at the Newman Softball Field.
