Box Score 2 WICHITA – Newman softball dropped a doubleheader to No. 13 Missouri-St. Louis on Tuesday (March 25) at the Newman Softball Field. The Lady Jets fell 5-0 and 6-1 to UMSL, and NU went to 11-15 on the season with the two losses. UMSL moved to 18-2.
UMSL 5, NU 0
The Tritons scored one run in the second inning and added two runs in each the fourth and fifth innings. A single through the left side plated the one run in the second inning. Another single through the left side in the fourth put UMSL up 2-0. A sac fly scored the second run in the inning for a 3-0 score. In the fifth inning, UMSL plated runs on a wild pitch and on an error.
The Lady Jets totaled only three hits with
Kelsey Jones going 2-for-4 with a double and a single.
Hannah Perryman pitched the complete game for the Tritons, allowing three hits and striking out 15 NU batters.
UMSL 6, NU 1
Jones hit a solo home run to left center to cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning, but UMSL scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull away in the nightcap.
The Tritons plated two runs in the top of the first inning. The two runs scored on a two-RBI double down the left field line to go up 2-0. NU cut the deficit in half with the Jones' home run in the fourth.
In the sixth inning, UMSL scored its first run on a sac fly then a single through the right side made it 4-1. The lead became 6-1 with a two-run homer in the seven inning.
Taylor Schawe went 2-for-3 in the nightcap. Jones and
Mikayla Medbery also tallied a hit in the game.
NU returns to Heartland Conference action this weekend with a three-game series against Oklahoma Panhandle State. The series starts with a doubleheader on Friday (March 28) at 1 p.m. at the Newman Softball Field.
