Box Score 2 WICHITA – The Newman softball team got a split with Tabor College on Wednesday (March 5) at the Mustang Academy. Tabor College got a 6-4 win in nine innings in the first game, and NU won, 6-2, in five innings game two. The Lady Jets moved to 7-8 overall.
Tabor 6, NU 4 (9 innings)
The Lady Jets pulled out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, however, Tabor College got runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings to force extra innings. After a scoreless eighth inning, Tabor plated three runs in the nine. NU tried to rally, but scored only one run in the ninth for a 6-4 final.
Kaityln Buck put NU 1-0, scoring in the first inning on an error. After
Jensen Cromer stole second,
Kelsey Jones scored on the throw as Tabor tried to get the out as second. The Lady Jets led 2-0 after the first inning.
In the second inning, Buck singled up the middle, scoring
Kelsey Fisher for a 3-0 score.
An RBI single in the third inning put Tabor on the board. They added their second run on another RBI single in the fourth inning. The Bluejays tied the score at 3-3 in the sixth inning on another RBI single.
In the ninth inning, Tabor plated two runs on a double to left center, and an error scored the third run of the inning for a 6-3 Blue Jays lead.
Mikayla Medbery hit an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to score one NU run, but the Lady Jets couldn't score more, falling 6-4.
NU 6, Tabor 2 (5 innings)
In game two, NU scored five runs in the third inning to pull away for a 6-2 win after five innings.
After one run in the second, NU plated five in the third. Buck picked up another RBI with a single down the leftfield line.
Sarah Balderas scored on the play. Jones knocked in two more runs with a double down the leftfield line. Buck and Medbery scored.
Missy Swanson hit in Jones with a double to left field.
Taylor Schawe hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring Swanson. The Jets led 6-2 after the third inning.
Jones picked up the win in the circle, going 5.0 innings and allowing one earned run on six hits and three strikeouts.
NU travels to Lubbock Christian for a four-game series in Lubbock, Texas. The series starts on Friday (March 7) with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. The series concludes on Saturday (March 8) with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. The second game of the doubleheader is non-conference.
