Box Score 2 WICHITA – After dropping game one, the Newman softball team scored a season-high 13 runs in a 13-5 nightcap win against Rogers State on Friday (April 11) at the Newman Softball Field. The Lady Jets dropped game one, 5-2. NU moved to 14-22 on the season and 5-12 in the Heartland Conference.
RSU 5, NU 2
Four late runs in the opening game downed NU by the score of 5-2. With the score tied at 1-1, RSU plated three runs in the fifth inning to go up 4-1. After one run by NU in the sixth, RSU added a run of their own in the seventh for the 5-2 score.
The Hillcats scored one run in the first inning to go up 1-0.
Kelsey Jones knotted the score at 1-1 with a solo home run, her team-high sixth of the season, in the fourth inning.
RSU plated the first two runs of the fifth inning on a double to left field. Another double, this time down the left field line, scored the third run for the 4-1 score.
Kelsey Fisher hit an RBI single in the sixth to score
Missy Swanson to make it 4-2. RSU's sac fly in the seventh was the final run in the 5-2 game.
Fisher went 2-for-2 with one RBI and one walk. Swanson was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and
Alyssa Jarman went 2-for-4.
NU 13, RSU 5
The Lady Jets started red hot in the nightcap, scoring 11 runs in the first three innings. NU put up three runs in the first and then followed with four runs in each of the second and third.
Swanson started the scoring with a single to right field that scored both
Mikayla Medbery and Jarman for a 2-0 NU lead. Sarah Baldaras hit an RBI single to left for a 3-0 advantage. Jones scored on the play.
In the second, Medbery hit her team-high fifth triple of the season as Jarman and
Megan McNeill both came home on the hit. A fielder's choice scored Medbery for the 6-0 score.
Kassidy Furr brought home the final run of the inning with a bases loaded walk. Jones scored.
RSU plated three runs in the top of the third inning to make it 7-3, but NU answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Medbery added another RBI with a single to the shortstop. An error allowed Medbery to score for a 9-3 advantage. Swanson scored after a fielder's choice where Jones was called out at home. The throw by the catcher to try and get Balderas out as second base allowed Swanson to score. Furr hit an RBI single through the left side to score Balderas for the 11-3 score.
Two fielder's choices in the fourth inning brought home runs for the Hillcats. The Lady Jets added two runs in the fifth inning to win the 13-5 after five innings. Jones doubled to left center to start the scoring in the fifth. Medbery scored. The final run came home after RSU's catcher threw to second trying to catch Swanson stealing, but the throw went to the outfield, allowing Jones to score.
Medbery went 3-for-3 with three RBI and scored four runs. Jones was 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Jarman, Swanson and Balderas all had two hits as well.
Jensen Cromer got the win in the circle. She went 5.0 innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits with seven strike outs.
The three-game series ends tomorrow with Senior Day at 12 p.m. at the Newman Softball Field.
