Box Score WICHITA – Two home runs by two freshmen led the Newman softball team to a 6-5 win on Senior Day against Rogers State on Saturday (April 12) at the Newman Softball Field. The Lady Jets took the series, 2-1, with the win and improved to 15-22 on the season and 6-12 in the Heartland Conference.
Freshman
Kassidy Furr hit the game-winning home run to center field to put NU up 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Fellow freshman
Sarah Morales went yard in the fourth inning with a two-run homer over the green monster in straight center field. The bomb scored Furr for a 5-4 NU lead.
RSU tied the score at 5-5 in the fifth inning with an RBI double.
The Hillcats went up 4-0 after plating four runs in the second inning. An RBI single started the scoring and then another single scored the final three runs of the inning.
After one run in the third by NU, the Lady Jets posted four runs in the fourth to go up 5-4. An error by the RSU rightfielder started the scoring as
Sarah Balderas scored. Furr hit a single to center field to plate
Kelsey Fisher. Morales' home run scored the other two NU runs in the inning.
Jensen Cromer came in to pitch the final 5.2 innings after senior
Taylor Parsons got her first start of the season. Cromer allowed two runs on nine hits with one strikeout. Parsons went the first 1.1 innings and allowed four hits and three runs.
Furr went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Alyssa Jarman went 2-for-4 from the lead-off spot. Morales was 1-for-1 with two RBI on the two-run homer.
NU travels to Pittsburg State on Tuesday (April 15) for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. in Pittsburg, Kan.
