Cromer’s Gem Gives Softball Split at UTPB

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ODESSA, Texas – Freshman pitcher Jensen Cromer threw a complete game two-hitter to lead Newman softball to a 1-0 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Texas-Permian Basin on Friday (April 25). With the 4-2 game one loss, the Lady Jets were eliminated from contention for the Heartland Conference Tournament. NU moved to 16-28 and 7-16 in the conference.
 
UTPB 4, NU 2
 
NU gave up four runs in the first two innings in game one, falling 4-2. A single to left field put UTPB up 1-0 in the first inning, and the Falcons added three runs in the second inning. Another single, this time up the middle, plated two runs for a 3-1 score, and a single through the right side made it 4-1.
 
The Lady Jets scored one run in the second inning on an RBI by Kelsey Fisher. Missy Swanson scored.
 
NU tried to rally, scoring one run in the sixth for a 4-2 score. Mikayla Medbery singled to centerfield to score Lacey Cowan from third base. Cowan started the inning with a single.  
 
Cowan went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Medbery was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
 
Kelsey Jones got the start in the circle, going 6.0 innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits.
 
NU 1, UTPB 0
 
In the nightcap, Cromer only allowed two hits in 7.0 innings. She struck out two with zero walks. Cromer had a no-hitter going through five innings as she allowed the first hit in the bottom of the sixth, a double to center field. A two-out single in the seventh inning was the only other hit allowed by the freshman. She forced 15 ground outs and four fly outs to go with her two strikeouts.
 
The game-winning run scored in the top of the seventh inning. After Sarah Balderas stole third, she scored on a throwing error by the UTPB catcher. Sarah Morales singled to left field to start the inning, and Balderas came in as a pinch runner. A sac bunt by Hyedi Viehmann advanced Balderas to second base.
 
The pitching duel saw only five hits. NU finished with three hits, and Kassidy Furr, Kelsey Fisher and Morales all went 1-for-3.
 
The series concludes tomorrow (April 26) at 12 p.m.
