Softball’s Rally Falls Short, Lady Jets Drop Two to StMU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA – A seven inning rally came up short as the Newman softball team fell to No. 5 St. Mary's, 6-5, in the nightcap of a doubleheader at the Newman Softball Field. NU dropped game one, 8-0. The Lady Jets fell to 13-20 on the season and 4-10 in the Heartland Conference.
 
NU 8, SEU 0
 
A six-run fourth inning for StMU helped the Rattlers pull away for an 8-0 win in the first game. An error allowed the first run to score. An RBI single brought home the second run of the inning for a 4-0 advantage. A sac fly scored the third run. The next run scored on a single to center field, and an error after a stolen base allowed the Rattlers to plate another run. The lead grew to 8-0 on a double down the line.
 
StMU scored one run in the second on an RBI single. The lead was 2-0 after a solo home run in the third inning.
 
The Lady Jets offense had a hard time getting going as NU totaled one hit.
 
StMU 6, NU 5
 
The Rattlers pulled out to a 6-1 lead in the nightcap, and NU plated four runs in the seventh inning for the 6-5 score.
 
A ground out scored the first run of the game for a 1-0 StMU lead. Two runs in the fifth made it 3-0. The Rattlers used two RBI singles to build the lead.
 
In the fifth inning, NU plated its first run. Kelsey Jones hit a single to right center, and Alyssa Jarman scored.
 
StMU added three runs in the sixth to go up 6-1. A double and a single scored the first two runs, and a sac fly brought in the final Ratters' run.
 
With a 6-1 deficit going into the bottom of the seventh inning, NU scored four runs. Jones hit a double through the left side, scoring Mikayla Medbery and Lacey Cowan. Miss Swanson, the very next batter, pulled the Lady Jets to within one with a two-run home run to left field.
 
After a pitching change, StMU held on for the win, getting the final two outs.
 
Jones went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Medbery was 2-for-4 and scored one run.
 
The series concludes on Saturday (April 5) with one game at 11 a.m. at the Newman Softball Field.
