WICHITA – The Newman softball team steps out of conference action today (March 10) to take on Southern Nazarene in a doubleheader at the Newman Softball Field on the campus of Newman University. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
It's the first home midweek games of the season for the Jets. After playing their first 16 games on the road, the Jets played home last weekend against Heartland Conference power Lubbock Christian. In the three-game series, NU went 0-3 against the Lady Chaps. The Jets held an 8-7 seventh inning lead in game two on Saturday, but let it slip away in the top of the inning, falling 15-8. NU lost 10-0 and 6-2 in the other two contests. On the season, the Jets are 2-17 and 0-6 in the Heartland Conference.
For the season,
Courtney Sartin leads the team in batting average at .351 and hits at 20. Taylor Shawe is hitting .350, and
Jensen Cromer is right behind at .348. Catcher
Annie Gentry has a .311 average. Leading the team in RBI is
Breanna Pingry at 12, and she has four home runs, tops for the Jets.
The Crimson Storm are 7-9 overall and 4-4 in the Great American Conference. During their weekend, SNU went 1-3 against Northwestern Oklahoma State in a four-game series in Alva, Okla. The Crimson Storm are just 1-5 on the road thus far this season. Their offense is led by Kylie Lang with a .512 batting average and 21 hits. Her 14 runs scored are also a team high. Melissa Padilla hits .364 with a team-high 16 RBI and three home runs.
After today's doubleheader, the Jets travel to Rogers State for a three-game series on Friday (March 13) and Saturday (March 14). NU returns home on Sunday (March 15) for a doubleheader against Emporia State at 2 p.m. at the Newman Softball Field.
