HAYS, Kan. – The Newman softball team looks to extend its winning streak with a doubleheader today (March 31) at 4 p.m. at Tiger Stadium. Live stats and audio will be available.
The Jets are currently on a four-game winning streak after a three-game Heartland Conference series sweep of Texas-Permian Basin. It was the first conference sweep for the Jets since 2011. With the wins, the Jets moved to 5-10 in the conference and are 10-24 overall.
NU's winning streak started with an exciting 7-5 win over Pittsburg State. Senior
Kaitlyn Buck hit a walk-off game-winning grand slam homer to send the Jets to the win. In game one against UTPB, NU used another walk off, as senior
Kelsey Jones singled with the bases loaded to lift the Jets to a 5-4 win. NU also won 7-1 and 10-7 over the Falcons.
Junior
Courtney Sartin leads the team with a .393 batting average. She has started 33 of the 34 games and has a team-high five doubles, one home run and 13 RBI. Lead-off hitter
Taylor Mannis is second on the team with a .333 average.
Breanna Pingry has a team-best four home runs and 14 RBI.
Katie Ingles had a strong week in the circle, getting two wins and she is now 5-10 on the season with a 5.67 ERA. She has a team-high 53 strikeouts.
Jensen Cromer is 5-8 with a 6.13 ERA. Both should get a start in the doubleheader.
The Tigers have won six of their last eight and are 17-14 overall. FHSU went 2-2 during the weekend with doubleheader splits against both Northeastern State and No. 19 Central Oklahoma. Amanda Vaupel leads the team with a .323 average with four home runs, six doubles and 18 RBI. Tori Beltz adds an average of .320 with nine doubles, six home runs and 26 RBI.
After today the Jets are back in action on April 10-11 at Oklahoma Panhandle State. The three-game conference series starts with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday in Goodwell, Okla.
