PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Newman softball team plays at Pittsburg State today (April 7) in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. at the Puttsburg State Softball Complex. Live stats are available for the twinbill.
It's the first action for NU since a non-conference doubleheader at Fort Hays State on March 31. NU dropped both games of that doubleheader in Hays, Kan. by the score of 9-3 and 5-0. Before the loses, the Jets were on a four-game winning streak that included a walk-off grand slam win over PSU on March 25 in Wichita.
Kaitlyn Buck hit the game-winning grand slam to lift NU to the 7-5 win. During the streak, the Jets also swept Texas-Permian Basin in a three-game series, the first Heartland Conference sweep since 2011.
The Jets are currently 10-26 on the season and 5-10 in the Heartland Conference. Shortstop
Courtney Sartin leads the team with a .372 batting average and five doubles. She adds 13 RBI and one home run. Outfielder
Taylor Mannis is hitting .333 with 15 runs scored and a team-high seven stolen bases.
Jensen Cromer is at .308 with four doubles, one home run and 13 RBI. In the circle,
Katie Ingles has a 5.65 ERA with a team-high 55 strikeouts. Cromer has a 6.36 ERA with 46 strikeouts. Both have five wins on the season.
The Gorillas are currently 24-10 and 5-1 at home. Cheslyn Mitchell has a team-best .407 batting average with 11 doubles, two triples and five home runs. She has 29 RBI. Leading the team in RBI is Kylie Guthier with 37 and seven home runs. She has a .351 average. Seven players in their lineup are hitting better than .300 on the season. And they have hit 42 home runs compared to allowing 21. Emmie Robertson leads the team with a 16-5 record in the circle with a 2.00 ERA.
In the previous meeting between the two teams this season, PSU won game one, 5-3, on March 25 at the Newman Softball Field. NU used a grand slam walk-off game-winning home run in the nightcap to get the 7-5 victory in the nightcap. The Jets trailed 5-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Buck homered to left field to give NU the win.
After today's doubleheader, the Jets travel to Oklahoma Panhandle State this weekend for three Heartland Conference contests. The series starts on Friday (April 10) with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Goodwell, Okla. Game three is Saturday (April 11) at 12 p.m.
