Jets Move Up In Rankings, Head To Midwest Duals

WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman wrestling team started receiving some attention in the latest D2wrestle.com national rankings, and Dustin Reed bumped up another spot in the individual ranks released this week.

The Jets, who got their dual season underway with a pair of tough losses to MIAA conference opponents on Wednesday and Thursday, received votes in the top 20 poll for the first time this season. They are ranked ninth in the Super Region 4 rankings.

Reed, a junior, who has been ranked at 125 pounds in each of the three regular season releases so far this year, moved up to No. 2 in the nation with the latest rankings. He remains the top-ranked wrestler in the region at his weight, and is joined by freshman Heath Gray, who is fifth in the region at 174.

The Jets are in action all day Saturday at the Midwest Duals, hosted by Nebraska-Kearney. Newman faces off against four quality opponents at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds Exposition Center.

Beginning at 9 a.m., the Jets take on Southwest Minnesota State, Chadron State, Minot State and University of Mary in four straight duals. SMSU, Minot State and UMary are all ranked in the top 14 of the Super Region 3 poll, while Chadron State is just ahead of the Jets at No. 7 in Super Region 4 and features four wrestlers in the top five at their weights in the region.
